Performance engines often have higher compression ratios and special cam timing. They also operate at higher RPM. In addition, they may be supercharged, turbocharged or use nitrous oxide. These conditions will increase the cylinder pressure and stress on the cylinder head gasket.
The key difference between regular FEL-PRO PermaTorque® head gaskets and FEL-PRO Performance PermaTorque® Head Gaskets is a wire ring combustion seal inserted inside the stainless steel armor of FEL-PRO Performance Head Gaskets. The pre flattened wire ring design provides highly concentrated sealing around the combustion chamber.
The wire ring helps concentrate the sealing load around the combustion chamber. Because of the wire ring, the combustion seal is squeezed by the head and block with a force about three times as great as standard head gaskets with a conventional armor and no wire ring. In addition, these Performance Head Gaskets have armors of the highest quality stainless steel available, and can withstand combustion pressures ranging from 1500 to 3000 psi.
Besides aiding in micro-sealing, anti-stick surface coatings make gasket removal and cleanup easier. This is a special advantage in performance applications, where engine changes and repairs require frequent disassembly.
